Product Review: AmeriGel for Wound Care

Sooner or later millions of people experience problems with wounds that pose serious healing issues.  They may result after surgery, accidents that create significant cuts or abrasions, or a variety of skin problems.  When there are wounds on feet people often experience especially stubborn healing problems.  An important class of high wound care costs are people with diabetes.  For example, costs for treating diabetic skin ulcers and ulcers from poor circulation in over 23 millions diabetics in the US were estimated to exceed $10 billion in 2007, and are expected to increase as more and more baby-boomers are diagnosed with diabetes every year.

I have experienced wound problems because, like millions of others that have been treated for heart and arterial disease, I take both Plavix and aspirin to prevent blood clots.  Elderly patients and people with poor circulation or compromised immune systems also can face difficult wound healing.  Many wounds do not heal rapidly because of infection or an accumulation of necrotic or devitalized tissue (debris) in the wound itself.  Common over the counter first aid antibiotic ointments deal with infection but not cleansing of dead tissue.

Because of recent foot surgery I have had the good fortune to use a product that is not widely known, but merits more recognition.  Interestingly, about 90 percent of podiatrists use and recommend nonprescription AmeriGel wound care products.  They are enriched with Oakin™ and classified and approved by the Food and Drug Administration as an antimicrobial hydrogel wound filler.  AmeriGel is designed to provide a moist wound environment, prevent infections and clean wounds of unwanted debris, all of which, if not addressed, can slow the body's natural healing process, which turns out to be a very complicated process.

Wounds can take a very long time to totally heal, from many weeks to months, or even longer.  So finding a product that works very effectively and quickly is very important.  AmeriGel works on a broad variety of wounds, including surgical incisions, diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, abrasions, lacerations, scrapes, cuts, rashes, psoriasis, eczema, cracks, and 1st and 2nd degree burns.

You may have heard about tannins in wines, because they are in grapes and also because most wines are aged in oak barrels.  Research has found that some tannin chemicals in wine have potent anticancer properties.  But of greater practicality is this: The key Oakin™ ingredient, unique to AmeriGel products, is a rather phenomenal natural substance.  It is a natural oak extract that apparently has been used for centuries and works because of the natural tannins found in it.  The unique tannins in Oakin™ have antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, exfoliant and other properties that reduce infections, reduce skin inflammation and promote natural healing.  They are also debriders, meaning they assist in the removal of dead, damaged, or infected tissue from a wound.  The product also keeps the wound moist which promotes healing..

This product should not be used if you have a known allergy to Oak or Oak pollen.

The company's website provides considerable information as well as testimonials from satisfied users.  A most consistent theme expressed is that AmeriGel has worked far better than other commercial wound healing products.  Which is what my podiatrist told me.  Another common finding is the AmeriGel produces healing in much shorter times than alternatives, including prescription medicines, for example, days instead of weeks, or weeks instead of months.

Here is one typical experience: "For the past 2 years I have suffered from blistering rashes on my hands. I tried everything on the pharmacy shelf to ease the itching and pain. Nothing worked.  Then my daughter saw an ad for your AmeriGel products in the local newspaper.  I figured it was worth a try.  So I ordered the Wound Dressing and the Care lotion.  Upon using your products, my hands started clearing up. It took about two weeks."

Considering widespread diabetes, this experience is impressive: "I am a serious diabetic who has already had toes amputated, so prevention is very important to me.  AmeriGel is the first product I've used that actually works.  I've used prescription topicals - very, very expensive ones - that don't work nearly as well.  I recommend AmeriGel to everyone I know with diabetes."

This experience is especially important for those with loved ones in nursing homes: "My mother has been bed-ridden for over 3 years and was prone to bed sores until I started using the AmeriGel products.  The Wound Dressing, in particular, has been a blessing in healing her sores almost overnight.  Her doctor and visiting nurses were so amazed at how much AmeriGel Wound Dressing has helped my mother that they are recommending it to their other patients."

Another customer said: "I have the type of eczema which affects the palms of my hands and the soles of my feet.  My skin thickens, cracks open and becomes very painful.  I have tried antibiotic ointments along with Carmol 40, which my doctor prescribed.  The ointments are not nearly as effective as AmeriGel.  I have found that the cracks in my feet heal days earlier with AmeriGel."

And you can't beat this succinct praise: "Using AmeriGel Wound Dressing I got my leg healed in about twenty days.  I had been told it would take a year by another doctor."

As to cost, most of us have already discovered the rather high costs for skin and wound care medications.  A relatively large amount (one ounce) of the AmeriGel wound dressing ointment will likely cost you about $22, though prices seem to vary greatly on websites.  My podiatrist sold me a post-surgery package containing both the AmeriGel would wash and dressing products, as well as other bandage and gauze materials, for $35, which I realized later was a good deal.  AmeriGel wound dressing is a product that belongs in pretty much anyone's medicine cabinet and more physicians should become aware of AmeriGel products.  Also, the company offers a full refund if their products are not found effective within 30 days.
